App updates and firmware updates affect different layers. The practical distinction is where the prompt appears, what layer changes, how the device screen behaves, and what completion record should be kept.
Define the update layer
An app update belongs to Ledger Wallet or installed apps; a firmware update belongs to the device layer. Name the layer before continuing.
Compare prompt location

Watch the screen for device-layer tasks
When the device layer is involved, read the Ledger screen as part of the action. If connection changes, use Connection and Compatibility Troubleshooting.
Record completion by layer
A useful note says whether the app layer or firmware layer changed, what version was shown, and what final state appeared.
