It is a common thought once you own a Ledger: should you buy a second one, just in case the first breaks or goes missing? Do you need a second Ledger as a backup device? For most people, the honest answer is no — your real backup is the recovery phrase, not another piece of hardware. Here is why one device is usually enough, and when a second can still make sense.
Your backup is the recovery phrase, not a second device
The key thing to understand is what actually protects you against a lost or broken Ledger. It is not a spare device sitting in a drawer — it is the recovery phrase you wrote down at setup. If your Ledger is ever lost, taken, or damaged, you can get any new compatible device, enter that phrase, and your accounts come straight back. The phrase, kept safe and offline, is the true backup; the device itself is just one convenient way to use it.

Why one Ledger plus a safe phrase is already enough
Because recovery depends on the phrase, a single Ledger with a well-protected phrase already covers the common worries, and you do not need a second device for safety. Lose the device on a trip and nothing is actually gone — your funds are on-chain, reachable again the moment you restore the phrase on a replacement. So buying a spare "just in case" does not add protection that the phrase does not already provide. What matters is that the phrase is recorded correctly and stored well. How to back it up is covered in recovery phrase backup.
When a second Ledger can still be worth it
That said, a second device is not pointless. Some people like being able to restore instantly without waiting to obtain a new one, or want one device at home and one elsewhere. Larger holders sometimes keep a spare so a single damaged device never even briefly interrupts access. These are matters of convenience and preference, not a security requirement — useful if you want them, but not something you are unsafe without. Restoring onto another device is covered in recover your wallet.
What actually deserves your attention
Rather than spending on a second device for peace of mind, put that same care into the phrase itself: make sure it is written accurately, stored offline, kept private, and ideally on a durable medium. A single Ledger backed by a well-protected phrase is already a complete setup. Get a second one if the convenience genuinely appeals to you — but do not feel that your assets are at risk without it, because they are not.
